Energy unifies mechanics and thermodynamics

Kelvin and Clausius realized in the 1850s that the key to understanding thermodynamics is to think in terms of energy, not heat. Energy was the key unifying concept of 19th century science, unifying Newtonian mechanics and thermodynamics.
