Key idea of Austrian economics insight into epistemology
The central insight in Austrian economics is not about markets in the narrow sense, but about epistemology. No single mind (or committee) can hold the totality of human preference, resource scarcity, and opportunity cost simultaneously, but prices do.
This insight is also true locally, at the individual agent level. People can only discover their comparative advantage through undistorted signal mechanisms.
This logic applies not just with prices in the economy, but in any complex non-linear system; understanding/effectiveness follows from identifying/engineering high-fidelity signal mechanisms.
Practical take away: When you cannot centralize knowledge, distribute authority to those with the relevant local information and use incentives to align their decisions with the larger goals.
