The rationality of irrational voters
It is often rational to indulge in irrational personal opinion because most of the cost is external. It can be rational to freeload when others are paying the bill. In real-world settings, the personal price of irrationality is nearly zero; it is the cost of the misguided policy scaled by the probability of the voter swaying the election.
