TB: Antifragility
Definition
Beyond resilience and robustness: a property of systems that gain from disorder, volatility, and stressors rather than merely surviving them. The opposite of fragile is not robust (unchanged by shocks) but antifragile (improved by shocks). Coined by Nassim Taleb.
Why it matters
The fragile/robust/antifragile trichotomy is a powerful diagnostic. Most of what we try to protect (jobs, institutions, supply chains, financial systems) we make fragile by over-optimizing for stability and removing the stressors that would build genuine robustness. The antifragile prescription is: embrace optionality, accept small losses to avoid large ones, favor trial-and-error over planning, prefer excess capacity over efficiency, and love the "via negativa" (remove negatives rather than add positives). Antifragility also explains biological systems: muscles, immune systems, and minds all get stronger under appropriate doses of stress.
