Definition
A statement so obviously agreeable that its reversal sounds bizarre — and therefore the original statement conveys no real information. If the opposite is clearly unthinkable, the statement is an applause light: it triggers approval without communicating anything.
Why it matters
Applause lights are a signal that rhetoric has replaced thinking. Detecting them is a critical thinking tool: ask whether the negation of a claim is even conceivable. If no reasonable person could hold the opposite view, the original claim probably has no content. Political speech and corporate communications are dense with applause lights.
