TB: Philosophy and Epistemology
Overview
Philosophy is the discipline that examines the assumptions underlying every other discipline. Its value is not in producing final answers but in clarifying questions, exposing hidden premises, and mapping the logical consequences of different starting points. Good philosophy makes you a better thinker in every domain; bad philosophy makes you confidently wrong.
Core Tension
Philosophical progress requires starting from some assumptions — but we are often wrong about which assumptions are safe. Moral intuitions are more reliable than metaphysical intuitions (evolution fine-tuned our moral sense; it did not tune our grasp of ontology). This asymmetry should make us humble about metaphysics and relatively more confident about ethics.

What philosophy is for
- Philosophy helps people in other disciplines understand the wider implications of discoveries and unsolved problems in their fields. A physicist who has thought about philosophy of science is better positioned to interpret what quantum mechanics actually tells us about reality. A biologist with philosophical training understands the difference between proximate and ultimate explanations.
- The value is clarification, not revolution. Philosophical analysis rarely overturns empirical results; it clarifies what those results mean and what follows from them.
The epistemological problem
- Every philosophical argument depends on assumptions (intuitions), and we are often wrong about which intuitions are reliable. This makes philosophy genuinely hard — not just hard because the problems are complex, but hard because we can't fully trust the cognitive tools we're using.
- This is less of a problem for ethics: our moral judgements have been fine-tuned by millions of years of social evolution. They are among our most reliable cognitive outputs. Strong moral intuitions carry evidential weight even when they resist articulation.
- Radical skepticism: we cannot prove that anything beyond our direct sense data exists. The radical skeptic is logically consistent. However, positing an objective external reality is justified by parsimony — it provides a simpler account of the correlations in our experience than any skeptical alternative.
- Radical skepticism is useful not because it might be true, but as a reductio ad absurdum for testing our intuitions. When a chain of plausible premises leads to a skeptical conclusion we find deeply implausible, we learn something about which premise was wrong.
Ground truth belief systems
- Philosophy needs axioms. Several plausible starting points:
- Common-sense intuitions of the first-person self (Moorean)
- State-of-the-art scientific worldview
- Scientific worldview + many worlds interpretation
- Non-dual awareness (supported by lack of a coherent theory of personal identity)
- Pragmatic approach (adopt what works)
- The choice of axioms shapes everything downstream. Being explicit about your axioms is good epistemic hygiene.
Moral epistemology
- Our moral judgements are historically among the most important outputs of our cognitive systems (getting morality wrong has often been fatal in social species). They are therefore among the most finely-tuned by evolution.
- Strong, widely-shared moral intuitions (e.g., "torturing children for fun is wrong") carry heavy evidential weight. An argument that leads to contradicting them is more likely to contain a hidden flaw than to have discovered a genuine moral truth.
- The limits of Utilitarianism: radical uncertainty about long-run consequences means we cannot actually compute the Utilitarian calculation. This frees us to do the right thing in the moment for its own sake — and have faith that doing right systematically produces better long-run outcomes.
Side-stepping deep mysteries
- The Hard Problems (Alison): Chalmers' Hard Problem of consciousness has a structural dual — how does objective physics arise from pure subjective experience? — that science has operationally solved without ever philosophically resolving. The pattern generalizes: the same Hard/Dual structure appears in Wigner's effectiveness-of-math question and in Plato's problem of how finite minds access abstract truth. Across all three domains, progress has not come from solving the fundamental mystery but from reframing it into a philosophical curiosity while explanatory work continues elsewhere.
- Methodological lesson: when confronted with a seemingly impenetrable philosophical problem, ask whether the dual has been operationally handled. If it has, the original problem may be side-stepped by the same implicit strategy rather than requiring frontal assault.
Reductionism as empirical discovery, not methodological commitment
- The Physics Behind the Discovery of the Higgs Boson — Series (Alison) (Part 3 — The Direction of Science): the convergence of explanations toward fewer, deeper principles as you probe down the web is a fact about nature, not a necessity. The post sharpens this by displaying three counterfactual structures the web could have had — divergence, isolated regions, circularity — each of which has at points seemed to obtain. This separates ontological reductionism (the empirical finding that fewer principles explain more phenomena at deeper levels) from methodological reductionism (the working assumption that one should look for such reductions). The first is a discovered structural fact; the second was Newton's bet — and the discovery is that the bet pays off.
- Caveat John folds in: "not all connections are worth making" — the meteorologist is right to use pressure fronts, not quantum equations. This implicitly distinguishes ontological reduction (in principle) from pragmatic explanation at scale (in practice). It does not engage with the stronger emergence position (Anderson's "more is different"; computational irreducibility) — that some higher-level laws are not derivable in principle, only in fact.
